n 1 ro. FIBERS AND TEXTILES COMPANY GASTONIA PLANT MAY. 1993 PLANT MANAGER’S MESSAGE By: Rowe Henderson The new plant (Rings Mountain Operations) start-up has finally taken place as of May 31, 1993. The first teams have done a very good job of starting up the machinery including safety, housekeeping, quality and Commitment to Excellence! The Results through Teamwork system is working extremely well and we're off to a great start in achieving our ultimate goal of becoming a world class producer of tire cord and industrial fabrics. A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who was involved and worked very hard to prepare the new plant for a successful start-up. The Gastonia plant's May performance showed several areas of improvement with the exception of safety. See data below: May Previous Item Results Month Budget Safety-No. of Incidents 5 2 2 Quality- % of Tire Cord Waste 1.02% 1.24% 1.00% Productivity- Pounds/ Manhour 48.2 47.1 44.0 The overall May performance enabled the plant to generate gainshare for all employees equalling $13,601 year- to-date. This is a very positive accomplishment during a difficult transition time. We should all feel good about this accomplishment and continue to do our jobs the very best we can in order to further increase our gainshare in the months ahead. Thanks to everyone for their hard work and commitment for continuous improvement. On July 14 there will be a New Plant Dedication Ceremony which is intended to introduce our new plant operations to our customers, suppliers, the news media, state and local government officials. Company executives and other special guests. PLANT MANAGER'S MESSAGE CONTINUED Later on this year we will have an Open House for all employees and their families to have the opportiinity to tour the entire facility when all the construction is entirely completed. ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS By: Sam Calouche BFS's new policy for a better environment has been approved and written to address the many environmental issues facing our businesses during the 90's and should serve BFS well in this regard. The new policy incorporates six major elements: o Compliance o Pollution Prevention o Recycling/Disposal o Remedial Sites o Communications o Responsibility The following quotes are taken from the introduction of a letter that MR. JIM McCANN wrote to present the new policy: "The things we do today determine our success or failure tomorrow. Environmental protection must be an integral part of our business activities." "Technology and the environment must go hand in hand to the market." "BFS must take a proactive stand on the environment." Implementing The New Policy at Gastonia - While this policy is intended to serve as an environmental "Road Map” for the corporation to follow, implementation of the policy is the real challenge. The new policy states that implementing the policy is the responsibility of all line managers. All employees should be committed to preventing pollution at its source and to reducing waste. The efforts of all employees at Gastonia in support of the new policy is critical to Gastonia, and in turn to BFS, in meeting the current and future environmental challenges.
